What have I been doing this year?
During this summer, I embarked on adventures after adventures, exploring every corner of the Pacific Northwest. This last summer, the curriculum involved ecology. Why simply read a book about the ecoregions when you can see them in person? One of the reasons I had agreed to homeschool was the possibility of learning in the field.
When the summer started, we began traveling to all the ecoregions. The first one was the local Puget Sound Lowlands. After completing the nearby regions, we branched out beyond our home. We circumnavigated the entire Olympic Peninsula in one day (long day). We also drove to the far eastern border of Washington and back, seeing the Columbia Plateau first hand. Our largest and longest trip was the most recent excursion to eastern Oregon. Along with the Alvord Desert, we journeyed to countless other areas such as Steens Mountain, the John Day Fossil Beds, Painted Cove, and Strawberry Mountain. What a trip. Throughout the summer, I documented my findings in a PowerPoint presentation on the ecoregions of Washington along with writing these blog posts.
Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy this presentation on the Ecology of the Pacific Northwest.
Note: Due to the unpredictable nature of the many wildfires this summer, some ecoregions were unable to make it on this presentation.
